We heard from Jim Speicher over the weekend and the situation in Cayes-Jacmel remains much the same. Remote areas such as this are only receiving the aid that local efforts such as Haiti Gospel Ministries can provide. This is why it is so important to give at a time such as this.
The road over the mountains remains closed do to landslides which have made the road impassible by any vehicle. These roads will need to be cleared and opened for the teams, which we are currently forming, to get to the region of Jacmel and Cayes-Jacmel.
The airport in Port Au Prince remains closed to commercial airlines and as you have seen on news reports many supply planes are in holding patterns around the world waiting to get their turn to drop off supplies.
Most news reports are stating the death toll now to be in the area of 150,000 to 200,000 and that authorities are struggling to maintain control of the city of Port Au Prince.
A report over the weekend that a ship with rescue supplies docked in the port of Jacmel. The ship had a vital aid shipment containing 4,000 tents and more than 300 family survival kits. Jacmel is a city of about 40,000 and is less than 10 miles from Cayes-Jacmel. Reports from Jacmel state that as much as 80% of buildings have been destroyed and that thousands are dead.
Haiti Gospel Ministries two school buildings and church are standing with apparently little damage. We however have heard that all schools are closed until passing an inspection for safety. We are currently determining how and what that means. The school and church remain open and are providing food and shelter to those in need.
We continue to need your prayers, donations and volunteers as we provide aid and help rebuild this remote area in Haiti.
