We have spoken to Jim Speicher several times after the latest earthquake.  This last rumble even though brief has added to the unrest and tension of this disaster. The school remains open to supply food to those in need.  Our supplies are running short, due to the increased need and we are in the process of having a shipment of supplies flown in to Jacmel and then transported to Cayes-Jacmel.  Reports from Jacmel are that word has spread that Jacmel has supplies and this has created a large increase in the population of this small city.  One news source reported that 80,000 homeless are now in Jacmel.  Without the resources that are being sent to Port Au Prince this large increase in people in need could create added problems in a city that has reported that up to 80% of all buildings have been destroyed.

We continue to work on the trip in March with the following projects being worked on:

  • Install a water purification system at the school which would be open to the community.  The possibility of supplying clean water at this time would not only help heal the injured and prevent disease but will have a benefit for the years ahead.
  • Continue to have the school used to provide food and serve to those in need. We are  determined to do what we can to minister to the Haitian people.  All of the years of laying the ground work for community change stands at the pressipass of either going to waste for lack of long term involvement by our donors, or we step into the answer to the prayer of Jabez.
  • Explore the possibility to have school resume for half a day (Bible with a little of the core subjects), feed children and then have children help clean up town under teacher supervision.  We are unable to resume normal school until the Department of Education gives OK.  This is not expected this year, this means that the all Haitian children will repeat their current grades.
  • Suspend any parent payments for school, allowing the parents to focus on rebuilding their homes and lives.  Our plan is to continue to have the teachers report and have them involved with the children and rebuilding and meeting the needs of others.  We are planning on continuing to pay the teachers during this time.
  • Ensure through inspection that our buildings and the buildings of the medical clinic are structurally safe.
  • Assist the medical clinic with any needs they may have. We also have had nurses and doctors contact us about joining our team in March.  This hospital is the now the only hospital in that southern region OF THE COUNTRY.
  • This school is the only standing school for miles and miles.  Caye Jacmel has the potential to be a new city, a large city in this region as people flock to it for help and sustenance.
  • Assist in community projects such as clean up and rebuilding.
  • Provide care to community where ever needed.

Securing transportation in and out of this area continues to be a challenge.  Although reports are that the road to Port Au Prince is now open.  It is reported that safety of those traveling it can not be assured. We are pursuing flying in from the Dominican Republic or boating in from Dominican Republic. We are hopeful that the airport in Port Au Prince begins to open for commercial air travel in February and this would greatly improve our options to travel in and out.An attitude that says I’ve given my $10, will not work.  An attitude that says I want to be a part of changing the face of a country—a backward 3rd world country.  Praising God, as my resources and sacrifice, coupled with that of thousands of others, is creating a Christian nation in the western hemisphere is where we can be in a few years.

If you have ever prayed the prayer of Jabez, know that there is a cost to increased territory.  What an amazing opportunity for all of Christendom!  Let’s move as a unified body!
